ChatGPT Is Sending Local Customers Now: How to Show Up in AI Answers
Picture a homeowner in Phoenix at 9 p.m., a towel pressed against a leak under the kitchen sink. She doesn’t open Google. She types into ChatGPT: who’s a reliable plumber near me who can come first thing tomorrow?
The answer names three companies. Each comes with a one-line reason someone should trust it.
Now picture you own the plumbing company four miles away with better reviews than all three. You never knew the question was asked.
Quick answer
To show up in AI answers, a local business needs to be easy for AI tools to find and easy for them to trust. That means allowing AI search crawlers, keeping your Google Business Profile and listings consistent, earning steady reviews, and publishing plain pages that state what you do, where, and for whom.
Key takeaways
- BrightEdge says ChatGPT referral traffic rose 101% from January to August 2026.
- AI is still a small slice of total traffic, but it is growing fast.
- BrightLocal found 45% of consumers used AI tools for local recommendations in 2026.
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your site out of ChatGPT search answers.
- Reviews, consistent listings and clear service pages give AI tools something to cite.
What did the new AI referral data show?
On September 24, 2026, search platform BrightEdge released data showing that referral traffic from ChatGPT increased 101% from January to August 2026. August alone jumped 36% over July, the biggest one-month gain of the year.
The same release put ChatGPT’s share of AI-generated referrals at 95.1% in August, a 2026 high. BrightEdge also said total referral traffic from AI platforms grew roughly 73% in less than a year.
In plain terms: when an AI assistant sends someone to a website this fall, that assistant is almost always ChatGPT. And it is sending more people every month.
How much traffic does AI actually send to websites?
Not much yet, and it helps to be honest about that. BrightEdge’s own release says traditional search is still the primary driver of website traffic.
A June 18, 2026 study by SE Ranking, based on Google Analytics data from 101,574 websites, found that AI platforms accounted for 0.32% of total website traffic in early 2026, up from 0.24% in 2025 and 0.02% in 2024. ChatGPT made up 74.78% of that AI traffic in the study’s 2026 data.
Small share, steep curve. The same SE Ranking study found that, in its January to April 2025 sample, AI-referred visitors averaged about 9 minutes 19 seconds on a site, versus 5 minutes 33 seconds for organic search visitors. People who click through from an AI answer tend to arrive with a specific question.

Are local customers really asking ChatGPT for recommendations?
Yes, and that is the part service businesses should care about most. BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey, published February 11, 2026 and based on 1,002 U.S. adults, found that 45% of consumers used ChatGPT or other generative AI tools for business recommendations, up from 6% the year before. That made AI the third most popular source of local recommendations in the survey.
Trust is building too. In the same survey, 40% of consumers said they trust AI platforms to recommend businesses, and 82% said they read AI-generated review summaries.
Scale explains why this happened so fast. OpenAI said in February 2026 that ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users. Some of those people have leaky sinks.
How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to mention?
No AI company publishes a ranking formula for local recommendations, and BrightLocal notes that AI tools vary widely in how they source information. But a few things are documented, and a few are common sense.
The documented part: OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot crawler is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features, and sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file and says changes take roughly 24 hours to register. It is a separate setting from GPTBot, the crawler tied to model training, so you can allow one and block the other.
The common-sense part: AI tools summarize what the web already says about you. If your listings disagree on your hours, your reviews are thin, and your website never states which neighborhoods you serve, there is little for an assistant to repeat with confidence.

What should a local business do this month?
None of this requires new software. It requires an afternoon and some follow-through.
- Check your robots.txt. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure it does not block OAI-SearchBot. Some security plugins and hosts block bots broadly. Ask your web person to confirm.
- Make your listings match. Your business name, phone number, address and hours should be identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook and any trade directories.
- Write the page an AI would quote. One clear page per core service, with the city or neighborhoods you serve, what it costs to get started, how fast you respond, and what makes you different. Put the answer in the first two sentences.
- Ask for reviews that say specifics. A review that says “fixed our water heater the same day in Tempe” gives an AI tool far more to work with than “great service.”
- Answer the real questions. Add a short FAQ to each service page using the questions customers ask on the phone.
- Test it yourself. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, with your city in the prompt. Note who gets named and what sources it cites.

How can you tell if AI is already sending you customers?
Look in your analytics for referral visits from chatgpt.com and other AI assistants, then check which pages those visitors landed on. Those pages are your strongest AI-facing content.
Then ask on the phone. A simple “How did you hear about us?” with “ChatGPT or another AI app” as a tracked option will tell you more than any dashboard. Track it for 60 days before deciding how much effort to put in.
Treat AI the way you would treat any new channel: measure, adjust, and keep it tied to calls and booked jobs, not vanity numbers. Our article on moving from AI experiments to operating advantage makes the same case for larger organizations.
Is it too early to bother?
AI referrals are still a fraction of what Google sends, so this is not a reason to abandon search. It is a reason to make sure the basics are right, because the same basics help on Google too.
Go back to that homeowner with the towel under her sink. The three plumbers ChatGPT named were not necessarily the best. They were the easiest to find and the easiest to describe. With consistent listings, specific reviews, and a service page that answers her exact question, the company four miles away has a real shot at being the fourth name on that list, or the first.

Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT use Google Business Profile information?
OpenAI does not publish a full list of the sources ChatGPT uses for local answers. Keeping your Google Business Profile accurate is still worth doing, because it is what Google shows in Maps and local results, and consistent details across the web give any AI tool fewer conflicting facts to sort through.
Will blocking AI crawlers protect my content?
Blocking GPTBot limits use of your content for model training, while blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your site out of ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI treats them as separate settings, so many businesses allow the search crawler and decide separately about training.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?
There is no published timeline. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register, but being recommended depends on what the wider web says about you, which usually builds over weeks and months.
Is AI search traffic worth more than Google traffic?
It is far smaller today. Some studies, including SE Ranking's 2026 analysis, found AI-referred visitors stay longer on average, but results vary by site, so judge it by calls and booked jobs in your own analytics.
Do I need a separate website for AI search?
No. The same clear service pages, accurate listings and specific reviews that help with Google are what AI tools summarize. Focus on making existing pages answer real customer questions directly.
